The Sycamore Millenium Centre
The Sycamore Millennium Centre has a function hall, which is used for social events; meetings, music, drama and youth club activities. It also has a small sports hall, which is used for table tennis, martial arts and football games for children below the age of 11 years. The priority target group of our youth service is the 'hard to reach' young people aged 13 to 17 years who are currently excluded from existing provision. Workers and volunteers have all been police checked and have received the necessary training/advice regarding the Renewal Trust's health and safety, first aid and child protection procedures. The Sycamore Complex Liaison group (made up of local user groups local residents and Renewal Trust representatives) have developed draft policies and procedures for youth workers and is currently working towards their full adoption.
We also encourage volunteering in the provision of youth services and actively encourage local people to become involved in the management of the Centre via the Sycamore Liaison Group.
We have recently been successful in securing funding for a five year programme as a Healthy Living Centre. This N.O.F initiative will enable the centre to develop healthy living options in health education, advice and counselling to be based at the Sycamore Millennium Centre.
The Millennium Centre is also a partner in an ICT learning Centres project funded by the C.M.F and N.O.F with partnership funding from Nottingham City SRB6 programme for community based learning. The project will be based at the Sycamore Business Centre and the IT Suit within the Sycamore Millennium Centre.
In addition to the above project we are also partners in a pilot to trial templates for DfEE Neighborhood Learning Centres as a complimentary activity and as a broadening to the ICT initiative.
Aims and Objective
We aim to provide and facilitate sport, the arts and recreational activities to provide fun and enjoyment, to develop physical and social skills, provide friends and companionship and to improve self-esteem. We are actively working with the City and other partners to support and manage the Sports Barn and Adventure Base for the benefit of local community and particularly local young people. As well as our youth club activities we are supporting the development of local sports teams for football and basketball utilizing the Sports Barn and the local park.
We enable young people to find solutions to their problems through peer support systems and by encouraging them to become involved in the decisions making process.
